Alfred Waugh Named on Maclean’s “The Power List” of 50 Canadians

We are thrilled to announce that Alfred Waugh, founder and principal of Formline Architecture + Urbanism, has been named to Maclean’s prestigious Power List for 2021. This list honors 50 Canadians who are “breaking ground, leading the debate, and shaping how we think and live.” Waugh’s recognition highlights his transformative contributions to Indigenous architecture and sustainable design.

Known for his culturally sensitive and environmentally responsible approach, Waugh’s projects often reflect the values of the communities they serve. One of his earlier and most notable works is the First Peoples House at the University of Victoria. Completed in 2009, the building embodies Indigenous architectural traditions, featuring natural materials and forms inspired by the Coast Salish longhouse. It serves as both a cultural and community space for Indigenous students, while promoting reconciliation through design.

Maclean’s recognized Waugh for his leadership in integrating Indigenous cultural identity with modern architectural practices. His work continues to bridge traditional knowledge with contemporary needs, offering innovative solutions that are both sustainable and rooted in cultural respect.

This recognition underscores Waugh’s ongoing influence in shaping a more inclusive and environmentally conscious future through architecture. We at Formline are proud of Alfred’s accomplishments and look forward to further advancing these vital principles in our projects.
