Groundbreaking Ceremony Held for University of Toronto Scarborough’s Indigenous House
We are excited to share that the University of Toronto (U of T) Scarborough has officially broken ground on the Indigenous House, an important new facility dedicated to fostering connection, learning, and cultural celebration.
Designed by Formline Architecture + Urbanism in collaboration with LGA Architectural Partners, the 10,700-square-foot (994-square-metre) building will serve as a vital resource for Indigenous students, faculty, and the broader university community.
Situated on a sloping piece of land south of the Instructional Centre, the Indigenous House will offer breathtaking views of the Highland Creek ravine, connecting the built environment with the natural landscape. The design incorporates sustainable principles and reflects Indigenous architectural traditions, creating a space that is welcoming, inclusive, and respectful of the land it occupies.
The Indigenous House will provide areas for community gatherings, academic support, and cultural ceremonies. The project represents the universities commitment to reconciliation and creating spaces that honor Indigenous heritage and support Indigenous-led learning.
