Formline Architecture + Urbanism is proud to announce that the University of British Columbia’s Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre (IRSHDC) has been nominated for the prestigious 2022 Mies Crown Hall Americas Emerging Prize (MCHAP). This nomination recognizes excellence in emerging architectural talent across the Americas, and we are honored that the IRSHDC has been included among the top projects.

The IRSHDC stands as an architectural response to the complex history of Indian residential schools in Canada. Located near UBC’s main libraries, the Centre is a place of memory, reflection, and healing. The design of the building plays a crucial role in this process, integrating natural light, culturally resonant materials, and a seamless connection with the surrounding natural landscape. These elements are not just aesthetic choices—they are central to the Centre’s purpose of supporting emotional and psychological healing.

The flanking decks and gardens, key features of the design, create a meditative space that encourages visitors to engage with the history and the land. The architecture is confident in scale yet invites openness and contemplation, carrying the emotional weight of its mission with grace and accessibility to all.
