Formline Architecture in Association with LGA Architectural Partners Awarded Canadian Architect 2023 Award of Merit

Formline Architecture and Urbanism, in collaboration with LGA Architectural Partners, was recently honoured with the 2023 Award of Merit from Canadian Architect. This prestigious recognition was awarded for their design of the Indigenous House at The University of Toronto, Scarborough. The accolade celebrates their approach and commitment to excellence in architectural design.

Leading the design initiative, Formline Architecture crafted an innovative method that integrates the traditional architectural elements of a bent wood wigwam structure with modern sustainable design principles. This approach not only respects but also revitalizes the cultural heritage of the local Indigenous communities.

Claire Weisz, one of the jurors for the award, offered high praise for the project. She noted, “A new form of architecture consciously emerges from the landscape and looks to Indigenous precedents, and it works well. The resultant building is clearly recognizable, and I expect will become a point of pride for the Indigenous community members using it.”

This award highlights Formline Architecture’s expertise and their ongoing commitment to pushing the boundaries of Canadian architecture. Their focus on sustainable and socially responsible design not only sets a benchmark in the field but also serves as a beacon of cultural pride and heritage preservation. The Indigenous House stands as a testament to the firm’s philosophy and their ability to create meaningful, impactful spaces.
