Alfred Waugh Leads Discussion on “Indigenizing Housing in British Columbia” at AHMA’s 2014 Spring Gathering

Formline’s Principal Architect, Alfred Waugh, had the privilege of participating in the Aboriginal Housing Management Association (AHMA) 2014 Spring Gathering, where he led a discussion on “Indigenizing Housing in British Columbia.” This important event brought together Indigenous leaders, housing advocates, and industry professionals to address the unique housing needs of Indigenous communities across the province.

Waugh’s session explored how culturally informed design can play a vital role in creating housing solutions that reflect Indigenous traditions, values, and ways of living. By centering Indigenous knowledge and perspectives in architectural design, housing can go beyond functionality—it can foster a deeper sense of community, cultural identity, and belonging. Waugh shared insights on incorporating natural materials, traditional spatial layouts, and sustainable building practices to align housing projects with Indigenous values.

The AHMA Spring Gathering served as a platform to discuss innovative approaches to addressing housing challenges of Indigenous communities. For more about AHMA and their initiatives to advance Indigenous housing, visit their official site.
