Formline Architecture + Urbanism is proud to announce that the First Peoples House at the University of Victoria has been awarded the 2011 Council of Educational Facility Planners International (CEFPI) Project of Distinction Award. This prestigious recognition highlights outstanding planning and architectural design for innovative learning environments, celebrating projects that demonstrate excellence in fostering educational, community, and environmental goals.

The First Peoples House, completed in 2010, serves as a cultural and educational hub for Indigenous students on the University of Victoria campus. Rooted in the traditions of the Coast Salish peoples, the building’s design reflects the architectural typology of a traditional longhouse while incorporating contemporary elements. By using natural materials such as cedar and locally sourced stone, and integrating daylight and sustainable energy solutions, the building connects visitors to the land and culture it represents.

At the 2011 CEFPI Annual Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, the First Peoples House was one of eight projects featured in the Exhibition of School Planning and Architecture. The juried competition assessed how well projects satisfied the planning process and addressed key aspects of the learning, community, and physical environments. The First Peoples House stood out for its ability to foster belonging and community while creating a space for both academic success and cultural connection.
