Formline Architecture + Urbanism is excited to announce that the construction of the Aboriginal Student Longhouse at North Island College’s Campbell River campus is almost complete. This longhouse, known as Q̓ə pix ʔidaʔas, is a culturally significant space designed to foster a sense of belonging for Indigenous students, faculty, and staff. Inspired by traditional Northwest Coast architecture, the longhouse will provide a welcoming environment for cultural events, gatherings, and academic support.
This project was developed in close consultation with the Wei Wai Kai and Wei Wai Kum Nations, ensuring that the design reflects the cultural heritage of the local Indigenous communities. With features like a central Liqwiltokw Big House design, the longhouse will house the Elders in Residence program, a community room for celebrations, and dedicated spaces for Indigenous language and cultural education.
As this important project nears completion, it promises to serve as a “home away from home” for Indigenous students at North Island College, offering a space where they can connect with their culture, each other, and the broader campus community.
