UBC’s Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre wins 2019 NACIA Award

We are humbled to announce that the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre (IRSHDC) at the University of British Columbia has been recognized as a winner in the 2019 North American Copper in Architecture Awards (NACIA). Presented by the Copper Development Association, the NACIA awards celebrate exemplary building projects that showcase the creative and innovative use of copper and copper alloys in architectural design.

The IRSHDC was honored for its thoughtful integration of a copper roof, a material chosen not only for its durability and aesthetic appeal but also for its cultural significance. Copper plays an important role in Indigenous traditions, symbolizing resilience, strength, and connection to the land. These qualities align seamlessly with the Centre’s purpose as a space for reflection, education, and reconciliation.

We are proud to see the IRSHDC included among this year’s award-winning projects, further highlighting the buildings significance as both a cultural and architectural landmark.
