Formline Architecture + Urbanism is proud to announce the completion of the Squaxin Island Tribe Natural and Cultural Resource Centre. This new facility unites two critical departments under one roof, providing a space that supports the Tribe’s ongoing commitment to preserving their cultural heritage and protecting the surrounding natural environment.

The Squaxin Island Tribe has historically maintained a deep and significant connection to the waters around the Olympic Peninsula, which has shaped both their identity and traditions. The mission of this project was to create a facility that inspires stewardship while enabling staff, community members, and visitors to engage meaningfully with the Tribe’s cultural and natural resources.

The main building program thoughtfully incorporates both functional and community-oriented spaces, including open and enclosed office areas, labs, archive storage, conference rooms, and changing facilities. At the heart of the building is a welcoming entrance foyer and outdoor barbecue area, creating a gathering place for the community to come together, connect, and celebrate shared traditions.

Adjacent to the main building, a works compound includes a boat storage garage and workshop, supporting the Tribe’s work on marine resource management and preservation. Every design element was considered to ensure that the centre reflects the Squaxin Island Tribe’s cultural values while meeting their practical needs.

The Natural and Cultural Resource Centre stands as both a functional and symbolic space—one that fosters collaboration, celebrates heritage, and reinforces the Tribe’s enduring relationship with the land and waters of the Olympic Peninsula.
