Barkerville Indigenous Cultural Centre
Barkerville, BC
The Barkerville Townsite, a national historic site in central British Columbia, is a walk back in time to the gold rush era of the 1800s. This period saw the convergence of Chinese and Indigenous communities, who significantly contributed to the economy and cultural fabric during the boom times. While the Chinese history is preserved through the tangible remnants of their merchant buildings at the end of the village, the physical presence of the Lhtako Dene people, who have occupied this region for thousands of years, remains conspicuously absent.
Our design for the Barkerville Indigenous Cultural Centre seeks to address this absence, offering a space that not only acknowledges the Lhtako Dene people’s enduring connection to the land but also honours their contributions and rich cultural heritage. The design is informed by deep consultation with the Lhtako Dene community, ensuring that their voices, traditions, and spiritual values are central to the project.
Drawing inspiration from traditional Lhtako Dene architectural forms and materials, the cultural centre is envisioned as a harmonious extension of the natural landscape. The use of locally sourced timber and other sustainable materials reflects the community’s reverence for the environment. The structure itself is designed to evoke the sense of a gathering place—a central element in Indigenous culture—where stories, knowledge, and cultural practices can be shared and preserved for future generations.
Inside the centre, spaces are carefully curated to provide an immersive experience into the Lhtako Dene way of life. Exhibits and installations will showcase traditional crafts, language, and oral histories, creating a living narrative that connects the past with the present. The centre will also serve as a dynamic venue for cultural events, workshops, and educational programs, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Lhtako Dene people among visitors.
